Goeppertia bachemiana (ghep-PER-tee-ah ba-kem-mee-AN-na)
Goeppertia bachemiana is a species of evergreen perennial that is native to the tropical rainforests of southeastern Brazil and thrives as an understory plant. It grows upright in a rosette formation and can reach up to 2 feet tall and equally as wide. This plant has a compact and bushy habit and is less commonly known than other members of the prayer plant family (Marantaceae.) The ornamental foliage has bright colors and intricate patterns, and is versatile as an indoor plant. The species epithet commemorates Alexander Bachem (1806–1878), mayor of Cologne, Germany. This plant prefers partial shade to dappled shade, and moist, rich, well-drained, all-purpose potting mix. Avoid overwatering. It thrives in warm temperatures from 60 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity of 50 to 60%. To increase the humidity consider purchasing a humidifier or place the plant in a bathroom or on a wet pebble tray. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. It is best propagated by division in the spring. Goeppertia bachemiana is non-toxic to pets and humans; however, the sap can cause skin irritation. Goeppertia bachemiana has a clumping habit, and the root system consists of rhizomes. The leaves are thick, leathery, ovate to lance-shaped, and greenish-blue or greenish-silver with dark green stripes. The undersides of the leaf can be purple to maroon. This plant is grown primarily for its foliage. Flowers can be produced under the proper conditions, and they are small and not as significant as the vibrant leaves. Goeppertia bachemiana is a popular ornamental houseplant and will add interest to any indoor space. Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Monitor for spider mites, mealybugs, aphids, and scale. Potential diseases include root rot from overwatering. Leaf leaf spot can occur from allowing the foliage to get wet when watering and from the lack of good air circulation. The leaf edges and tips can become brown due to the fluoride content in tap water. It is preferable to use distilled or rain water for this plant. The leaves can curl from lack of water or from low humidity. The colors of the leaves can fade from inadequate light. Direct sunlight can cause leaf burn.
