New Guinea Impatiens
Impatiens (im-PAY-shuns hy-BRID-uh)
The SunPatiens® is a registered hybrid of impatiens resulting from crosses between traditional New Guinea impatiens and wild impatiens. This series of impatiens was developed by a Japanese seed company called Sakata and is available in a wide variety of colors. The plants are grown as a perennial in zones 10a through 11b, but in cooler climates, you can enjoy these colorful plants as annuals. The SunPatiens® plants are generally larger and bushier than the traditional New Guinea impatiens and produce more blossoms over a longer spring to frost bloom period. SunPatiens® plants are divided into three series with different habits: Compact Series (a compact habit 18 to 24 inches tall), Spreading Series (a mounding habit 24 to 30 inches tall) and Vigorous Series (a vase shape habit 30 to 36 inches tall). Flower colors include shades of pink, coral, orange, salmon, red, lilac, lavender and white. U.S. Plant Patents have been obtained or are pending for all plants in this series. Unlike other members of the Impatiens genus, this hybrid has been developed to perform well in full sun and in hot and humid summer climates. Full shade should be avoided. They perform best when they receive regular watering, however, they do not lose their flower buds when water-stressed. Drying out may cause leaf scorch. Use in the border of cottage gardens to add color throughout the summer. They can also be used in containers, on slopes and along walkways. Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: No significant insect or disease problems. Unlike other varieties of Impatiens, SunPatiens are not affected by downy mildew. Possible problems include impatiens necrotic spot virus, fungal blights, powdery mildew, and rots. Potential insect problems include aphids, mealybugs, thrips, whitefly, slugs and snails, and spider mites.
