Dandy Man Color Wheel® is an evergreen hybrid rhododendron in the Ericaceae family, bred by Dr Tom Ranney of NCSU with good heat and disease resistance. This shrub grows 4 to 8 feet tall and wide and prefers part sun to full sun, receiving at least 5 hours daily. Plant in acidic, moist, well-drained soils and mulch to help retain moisture. If pruning is needed, do so soon after flowering only, as this shrub blooms on old wood. In spring, red buds open to ruffled pink blooms in clusters that turn white with age. The evergreen foliage remains attractive the rest of the year. Use this evergreen rhododendron as a hedge, in a shrub border, for privacy and as a foundation plant. Keep in mind its potential size is 8 x 8 feet. Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: More disease-resistant than other varieties. Insect problems include aphids, borers, lace bugs, leafhoppers, mealybugs, mites, nematodes, scale, thrips, and whitefly. Diseases include canker, crown rot, root rot, leaf spot, rust, and powdery mildew. This plant is frequently damaged by deer. See pests of rhododendrons to the left.
