The International Herald Tribune rose is a deciduous shrub rose in the rose family (Rosaceae). It was introduced to the UK by R Harkness & Co. Ltd in 1984. Parentage is (Blue Moon x (Lilac Charm x Sterling Silver) x Orangeade x LiLilac Charm) x (Orange Sensation x Allgold) x Rosa californica). This shrub will grow 3-4 feet tall and 3 feet wide. It prefers full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Prune in late winter to remove dead or diseased canes and prune the remaining canes by 1/3 to control size and encourage bushiness. Avoid overcrowding and overhead watering to help prevent diseases. In spring clusters of lightly fragrant cupped, mauve to mauve-blend flowers with yellow centers continue to bloom in flushes through the season. The semi-glossy compound leaves are on stems with prickles. Use this shrub in the border, as a specimen or accent, in a cottage garden or English garden. Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Black spot, powdery mildew and rust can occur. See pests of roses to the left. Deer will browse roses.
