New Dawn is a light pink climbing rose cultivar in the rose family (Rosaceae) discovered in 1930 by Somerset Rose Nursery, NJ, as a sport of 'Dr. W. Van Fleet'. New Dawn is easy to grow and will do best in fertile, moist, average garden loams in full sun to light shade. It will grow 10-15 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide. Remove any crossed, diseased or dead canes anytime to help increase air circulation and decrease disease susceptibility. Clean up any dropped leaves and flowers in the fall and prune in late winter to early spring as needed. Apply mulch to help maintain moisture. The soft pink flowers are sweetly fragrant and semi-double to double, occurring heavily in June and then repeat blooming through fall. The leaves are glossy green, the stems have prickles and abundant rose hips are produced in the fall for additional interest. In 1997, it was voted the most popular rose in the world at the 11th World Convention of Rose Societies and is recognized as one of the best of the repeating climbing roses.
