'The Garland' is a vigorous, spreading rambling rose bred by William Wells in 1835. It was introduced in Australia in 1899 as ‘The Garland’ by C. H. Halstead. It is a hybrid of Rosa brunonii and Rosa multiflora and is a member of the rose family (Rosaceae). The mature height after 3 years may be 10 to 26 feet and a width of 8 to 13 feet. It tolerates poor soil and partial shade but flowers best with full sun in fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil. Fertilizer applied in late winter and early summer produces more flowers. When planting the rambling rose, prune the stems to 16 inches. Train the shoots to grow horizontally by tying the new stems. Prune in late summer to prevent tangled branches with few flowers. Deadhead the flowers if the showy hips display is not wanted. Renovation pruning can be done between late autumn and late winter. Propagate by hardwood cuttings in autumn or by grafting in the summer. The cream flowers, dark green leaves, and orange hips are showy. The small (1 to 2 inches), semi-double flowers bloom in large clusters once for 3 to 4 weeks. The strong, fruity rose fades from cream to white. 'The Garland' was awarded an RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) which is given to plants likely to perform in appropriate conditions and is reasonably resistant to pests and diseases. Place them along a 10-foot fence or large structure to create a screen. They can be pruned into a small tree or grown on an arch/pergola in a cottage, English, or cutting garden.
