The Westerland rose is a shrub or climbing rose in the rose family (Rosaceae) that was bred by Reimer Kordes in 1969. Parentage is Friedrich Worlein x Circus. This vigorous plant can be grown as a shrub or trained as a climber. it can get quite tall, especially in warmer climates, growing 8-12 feet tall with a 3–6-foot spread. Westerland needs moist, well-drained, fertile soil in full sun but tolerates partial shade. It will also tolerate poorer soils. Prune dead or diseased canes at any time. Prune in late winter to early spring to remove any winter damage and to shape as needed. Mulch will help retain moisture. Fertilize in early spring and early summer. The large, double, apricot flowers have a spicy fragrance and appear in clusters nearly continuously throughout the season. They look very nice against the dark green glossy foliage. Spines are present on the stems. The foliage is fairly disease-resistant. Use Westerland on a trellis or fence or grow as a shrub in the border, as a hedge, or a specimen. Won the Garden Merit Award from the Royal Horticultural Society and in 2007 received the Great Plant Picks Winner.
