The Bodnant Viburnum is a hybrid deciduous viburnum shrub that is a cross between V. farreri and V. grandiflorum in the Viburnaceae family. It was bred in Bodnant Garden, North Wales, in 1934 to 1935, and several cultivars have been developed. The genus name comes from the Latin name of a species plant. The specific epithet refers to Bodnant Garden, Tal-y-Cafn, North Wales. Plant in sun to partial shade in medium, moist, well-drained soils in an area protected from late spring frosts. Propagation is by stem cuttings. It will grow 8 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. These shrubs bloom in colder climates on naked stems from late winter to spring and in warm winter areas, they bloom on naked stems from late autumn to spring. Fragrant, tubular pink flowers appear in flat clusters and are followed by berry-like drupes that mature to black in fall. The spring leaves have a bronze tint and fall color is shades of burgundy-red. The three listed cultivars have all been award the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.n Use these shrubs as a hedge, a specimen or in the back borders of a pollinator, cottage or winter garden. Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Watch for viburnum borers, aphids, thirps and spider mites. Potential diseases are root rot, fungal diseases and botryosphaeria canker and dieback.
