Burkwood Viburnum

'Conoy' viburnum is a cultivar known for its compact, spreading habit and glossy foliage. This shrub is dense, multi-stemmed, and grows to 4 to 5 feet tall and 7 to 8 feet wide. It is hardy to zones 5 to 8 and will likely remain evergreen in warmer climates such as zones 7 to 8. It has creamy white flat-topped, umbel-like, and mildly fragrant flowers that appear in the spring. The flowers cover the shrub when in bloom, and they appear pink when closed but are primarily white when opened. The leaves are glossy, dark green, and opposite, and both the stems and foliage are finely pubescent. The foliage color of deep maroon provides fall interest. In warm southern climates, the leaves often remain on the plant throughout the winter. The red fruits turn blue-black and remain on the plant through the fall and are enjoyed by birds. Consider this cultivar as an accent, in small groups, as a shrub border, or as a foundation planting to provide spring, summer, and fall interest.
