Pyracomeles is a hybrid genus resulting from an intergeneric cross between Pyracantha and Osteomeles, both in the rose family (Rosaceae). The first cross was found in France in the 1920s at a seed company's plant outside of Paris. The hybrid name Pyracomeles is a combination of the names of the two parent genera: Pyracantha and Osteomeles . Juke Box® is an evergreen cultivar developed by Dr Tom Ranney of NCSU. The shrub is compact, growing 1 to 3 feet tall and wide with a rounded form. Grow Juke Box pyracomeles in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, average, moist to dry garden soil. Little pruning is needed unless desired. The glossy green leaves stay attractive year-round on thornless branches. The shrub tolerates pruning to shape, so it can be used in place of boxwoods. This shrub does not bloom or produce fruit. Use Juke Box pyracomeles in groups, in borders, as a low hedge or for edging. Use in the border of a drought-tolerant or winter garden. Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Susceptible to apple scab, fireblight and various wilts. Potential insect pests include aphids, lacebugs and scale.
